The Institute for Musculoskeletal Health was honoured to welcome Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister for Health and Ageing Mark Butler and local Federal Member Tanya Plibersek to celebrate the opening of our new office space and recognise the importance of musculoskeletal health research in Australia.
"It is a pleasure to be here among so many incredible people – researchers, clinicians, health workers, support staff. As together, we celebrate the opening of this new home for the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health. Into the future, these rooms will serve as the launchpad for your vital work," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
The visit brought together researchers, clinicians, health workers, health service managers and commissioners, professional staff, higher degree research students and consumers with lived experience whose collective efforts are helping to improve the lives of millions of Australians affected by musculoskeletal conditions, physical inactivity and falls.
Musculoskeletal conditions affect around seven million Australians and are a leading cause of pain, disability and reduced quality of life. Addressing this growing health challenge requires strong partnerships between research, healthcare and government, alongside continued investment in innovation and evidence-based care.
During the visit, the Prime Minister acknowledged the significant contribution of the musculoskeletal health community and announced a landmark $100 million Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Conditions Research Mission through the Medical Research Future Fund. This record investment will support research aimed at improving prevention, treatment and care for Australians living with arthritis and related conditions.
The announcement represents an important step forward for the sector and reflects a growing recognition of the impact musculoskeletal conditions have on individuals, families and the healthcare system.
The Institute for Musculoskeletal Health warmly welcomes this new funding and the opportunities it will create for researchers, clinicians and consumers working together to improve outcomes for people living with musculoskeletal conditions.
We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the University of Sydney and Sydney Local Health District for providing our new home and for their ongoing support of our work. This collaborative environment will enable us to continue advancing research, translating evidence into practice and supporting better health outcomes for communities across Australia and beyond.
The opening of our new home marks an exciting new chapter for the Institute. We look forward to continuing our work with health services, consumers, researchers and policymakers to drive innovation, improve care and help ensure all Australians can access the best possible musculoskeletal health services.
"As the son of a mother who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, that mission is particularly close to my heat. I saw the pain and difficulty of that disease, and how it can make a person suffer.
But I also know that those conditions do not define an individual. And with the right care and support from those around them, they do not have to limit them, either. That is why your work is so important.
Because with sharp minds and dedication, you give hope and health to those who need it most. And you capture the best of the Australian tradition and the Australian spirit – co-operating, driving breakthroughs and making the world a better place," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
We thank Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister for Health and Ageing Mark Butler MP, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney Prof Mark Scott, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Prof John Prins, Chair of the Sydney Local Health District Board Karen Crawshaw, Acting CE of SLHD Dr Genevieve Wallace, and local Federal Member Tanya Plibersek and our guests for joining us to celebrate this important milestone and share our vision for the future of musculoskeletal health research and care.
