Staying active these school holidays

ree

Spring school holidays are coming up in NSW. You might be wondering how to keep the kids entertained and fit in some activity for yourself.

The good news? Looking after the kids or grandkids is the perfect chance to move more without it feeling like exercise.

Here are some simple ways to stay active these holidays:

Turn outings into exercise

  • Movies with a twist: If you’re heading to the cinema, consider catching public transport instead of driving. It adds a walk to and from the station or bus stop. If you drive, take a few laps around the shopping centre before the movie starts.

  • Zoo, aquarium, or museums: Kids love them, and so will your step count! These outings usually mean plenty of walking. Wear comfortable shoes and you’ll be surprised how much ground you cover.

Make the park your gym

  • While the kids play, walk around the playground instead of sitting, while keeping them in eyesight.

  • Try some light exercises like squats, lunges, or sit-to-stands on a bench. Even a gentle stretch while supervising goes a long way.

  • Bring a ball or frisbee and join in, it’s fun for the kids and keeps you moving.

At-home activity breaks

If you’re spending the day at home, avoid long stretches of sitting.

  • Take a short walk around the block.

  • Do a few minutes of home exercises: yoga, light strength moves, or balance practice.

  • Put on some music and have a dance session with the kids - they’ll love it!

Other fun ideas for active days with the grandkids

  • Nature walks: NSW is full of beautiful parks and walking tracks. Try Centennial Park, the Royal Botanic Gardens, or a coastal walk.

  • Bike or scooter rides: Walk alongside while the kids ride.

  • Local pools or aquatic centres: Swimming (or even just walking in the water) is a great low-impact activity for you, and lots of fun for them.

  • Backyard games: A game of chasey, hopscotch, or skipping is playful exercise for everyone.
